TABC advisor Baglan Rhymes to speak at Data Driven Women Event. Baglan Headshot

Data Driven Women 0.9: Data Responsibility in Today’s Global Landscape   Join us May 21, 2014 for our next Data Driven Women event featuring Baglan Nurhan Rhymes, SVP & Head of Revenue atAnchorFree.com, the largest Virtual Private Network assuring privacy and security for its 200 million users to date spread over 190 countries throughout the world.

Overseas, the AnchorFree business model of protecting the individual’s privacy has been credited with helping fuel Arab Spring, cracking the great “Chinese Firewall’ and providing freedom to access content for people living under government censorship. In the U.S. Anchorfree is utilized to access and consume content securely to prevent hacker attacks and identity theft, especially in public Wi-Fi locations.

In this talk Baglan will explore the challenges and solutions in running a data-driven business in an unpredictable and often hostile political landscape. There are assumptions pertaining to data which we need to be vigilant.  For example, Eric Schmidt, Google executive chairman, says, “Technology is not really about hardware and software any more.  It’s really about the mining and use of this enormous data to make the world a better place.” An easy assumption today is that the availability of “data” will work to achieve the transparency that opens societies up for the exercise of freedom that is democracy.  However, is this actually borne out historically? I would argue that “data” is only as good as the interpretive mind that reads it. We, as miners and custodians of data, can’t afford to be deaf to the social, cultural, and political nuances in the world around us. We are at a crossroads right now. The question is not what is technically possible; the question is what can we ethically do?
