EMERYVILLE – Assemblymember Nancy Skinner announced today the recipients of the 15th Assembly District Women of the Year Awards, celebrating women trailblazers who have made significant contributions in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). This year’s honorees recognize women and organizations that have made groundbreaking contributions in STEM fields and have helped advance, involve or educate women and girls in STEM.

“The East Bay is home to many distinguished women who have shattered the glass ceiling in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math,” Skinner said. “The women and organizations honored are fueling new innovations and technologies that are changing our world for the better. Honoring these role models, we pave the way for many more women and girls to excel and change the faces of STEM.”

Giving the keynote address at the award’s ceremony will be Public Utilities Commissioner Carla Peterman. Ms. Peterman is a Ph.D. candidate at the Energy and Resource program at University of California, Berkeley, a Rhodes Scholar, and the first African American woman to be appointed to the California Public Utilities Commission.

Nilgun Ozer, Ph.D., professor of Electrical Engineering and the Director of the MESA Engineering Program (MEP) at San Francisco State University, increased enrollment in engineering classes at SF State by 130 percent, increasing the number of women and students of color. Dr. Ozer is also a faculty advisor for the National Society of Black Engineers, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and the Society of Women Engineers.
